Can diabetics eat tortillas? Well, if you are referring to white flour or corn tortillas, then prepare to bolus! Flour tortillas are traditionally made with cornflour or all-purpose flour, which can be a big spike in blood sugar for diabetics. So, if you want to avoid the traditional flour tortillas. It all comes down to net carbs and the impact on blood sugar. A good healthy low-carb tortilla is a great addition to your diabetic-friendly pantry.

Tortillas for Low carb School Lunches

So, what are the best tortillas for diabetics?

Even though I use an Insulin Pump and can bolus insulin for foods that are high carb, I try to avoid them, for a couple of reasons. The first is, that I have eaten low-carb all of my life and when I eat sweet or high-carb foods they cause me to get a headache. The second reason is that even though I can bolus for the high carb levels, it still seems to elevate my blood sugar out of range for long periods. The effort to get my blood sugar back in range just isn’t worth it to me. Sometimes, it’s like there are hidden sugars that are beyond my control.

In this post, I will provide a short list of 5 of the best tortillas for diabetics. (my picks) I will tell you where to buy them and also a quick recipe for Easy Low Carb Chicken Wraps using my top pick low carb tortilla.

My Top picks for the best tortillas for diabetics.

Joseph’s Lavish Bread

Best tortillas for diabetics – Lavish Bread and tortillas

I have been using Joseph’s Lavish Bread for a few years now. I love them because they are soft and easy to use. They taste great. They are super low-carb and come in large sheets, tortillas and pita bread.

Where to buy Joseph’s Lavish Bread.

Joseph’s Lavish Bread is generally available in health food stores, Keto Shops and online here. Some supermarkets may carry them, but as a rule, they are considered a specialty food item that is not available in many grocery stores

The downfall is the price. Corn flour or whole wheat flour tortillas are a lot cheaper, but as a diabetic, I am accustomed to having to pay a little more for diabetic-friendly options! In comparison to other tortillas that are diabetic-friendly, they are pretty competitive.

Carb Counts – The large lavish sheets are 60 calories, 8 grams of total carbs, and 2 grams of fibre, resulting in 6 grams of carbs per serving. One large Lavish Bread sheet is two servings. The large sheets are perfect for making wraps. I spread out my filling across a sheet and then roll it up. Then slice them into four equal pieces. That is enough for two lunch servings.

#2 – La Banderita Carb Counter Tortillas

Best tortillas for diabetics

My 2nd pick for my list of best tortillas for diabetics is the “La Banderita” Carb Counter brand tortillas. These low-carb tortillas are perfect for tacos and wraps. Smaller than the large lavish bread sheets, but better suited for tacos.

The appearance of these tortillas better resembles the traditional white tortilla. The La Banderita tortillas are available in different sizes. The regular size (42 grams) has 45 calories, 15 grams of carbs and 11 grams of fibre, resulting in 4 grams of net carbs.

La Banderita’s carb Counter tortillas are available at many supermarkets, some health food stores and online here.

Like other low-carb options, the La Banderits Tortillas are a little more expensive than the regular high-carb white or whole wheat tortillas. These are also Keto Friendly.

#3 Xtreme Wellness High Fibre Tortillas

Best Tortillas for Diabetics

My third pick for the best tortillas for diabetics is Xtreme Wellness brand High Fibre tortillas. These tortillas resemble whole wheat tortillas, so they are a little drier than the previous brands. I have used this brand to make Quesadillas and have been pretty happy with them.

One Xtreme Wellness 28-gram tortilla has 30 calories, 10 grams of total carbs, and 7 grams of fibre, resulting in 3 grams of net carbs. These are a bit smaller than the previous two brands listed. This brand is also Keto Friendly. These make great snack-sized pizza crusts.

Xtreme Wellness tortillas are available at many grocery stores and supermarkets. I have not been able to find them in my health food stores. They are also available online HERE.

#4 – NuCo Coconut Wraps

So yes, there is a hint of coconut in the wrap. But once you add filling or sauces etc, it quickly is overtaken. These are nice and soft and have a nice white colour. They have a very long shelf life, as they don’t contain any egg or dairy products.

They are a decent size – roughly 7 inches in diameter, which makes them a good size for wraps and tacos.

NuCo Coconut Wraps are available in many grocery stores, supermarkets and some health food stores. I was also able to purchase these at a local keto shop. They can also be purchased online HERE.

#5 – Mission Low Carb Tortillas

Diabetic Friendly Tortillas

Like the others mentioned above, these Mission Tortillas are excellent. They are soft and fresh. They are very pliable and make great tacos, wraps and burritos. They are comparable in size to the others and are available in a variety of sizes.

Like the others, the Mission Tortillas are more expensive than a regular tortilla made with white flour or corn flour, but that is exactly as expected.

If you are a diabetic and do not like eating low-carb, then make sure you read the label and understand the nutritional values and always monitor blood sugar levels.
