Helpful Tips and FAQs
Making Sugar Free Honey Garlic Skewers without a BBQ
Using an oven
If using an oven, preheat the oven to 375 F. Place a wire rack over a baking sheet. Bake for about 5 minutes and turn the shrimp. Make sure you brush on the marinade sauce after turning. Bake for another 4 to 5 minutes or until done.
Using an Air Fryer
You can easily make our Sugar Free Honey Garlic Skewers in an air fryer. you may need to make smaller skewers, so they fit. I have an air fryer that has a rotisserie and skewers, so that is easy peasy. You may need to adjust cooking time and temperatures, based on the size of the shrimp and the type of air fryer you have. ie basket, rotisserie or shelf style.
Aim for a temperature of about 375, and rotate as directed in the recipe, brushing with sauce after turning.
Using a Stove Top Grilling Pan
Using a stove-top grilling pan, heat the pan on high and then turn it down to medium-low hear. Add the shrimp and cook for 4 minutes and then turn. As in all other methods of cooking, don’t forget to brush with sauce.
Cooking Times for Raw or Cooked Shrimp
I like to use pre-cooked deveined and peeled shrimp because it is hard to find peeled, deveined raw shrimp where I live. This recipe works with either. The cooking time for raw shrimp will be longer.
When the shrimp is fully pink and opaque, you know it is done.
Substitutions
Splenda Sugar Free Multi-Use Syrup
if you would prefer to substitute the Splenda Syrup with another product you could make a honey-like syrup using Jordan skinny syrup and about half a teaspoon of honey extract. Mix it well together and then use it in place of the Splenda multi-use syrup. It may not be as thick so you may need to add a little bit of Xanthan Gum or gelatine to thicken it up.
there are also other products on the market that are labelled sugar-free honey substitutes. I have not had a lot of luck with these as I find some of them grainy and I’m limited on which products are available to me.
As always keep an eye on the carbohydrate content and adjust nutrition information accordingly.
Canola Oil
Feel free to substitute the canola oil with another oil of your choice. Olive oil and avocado oil are both good choices and work well. Keep in mind when substituting oil that the flavours from other oils can alter the final flavour of your shrimp skewers.
Storing and Freeing Instructions
Refrigerator – I do not recommend keeping the shrimp skewers any longer than three days. Keep it refrigerated tightly wrapped in plastic wrap or in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Freezer – Ideally this recipe is best when made fresh. If you are going to freeze already cooked sugar-free honey garlic shrimp skewers I recommend you freeze them unskewered and in the sauce in an airtight container. Allow the mixture to thaw fully and then reheat on a grill, in the oven or in an air fryer.
