Pro Tips
Tip for getting the smoothest frosting.
Sugar-free frosting can be a challenge. Sometimes it can turn out a little grainy. This often results from using a zero-calorie granulated sweetener. One way to ensure that the sweetener doesn’t cause your frosting to become grainy or gritty is to pulse it in a blender before using it in this Diabetic Cream Cheese Frosting recipe. Just pour your sweetener into a blender and pulse it for a few seconds. Let the blender sit for a couple of minutes to let the sweetener settle in the blender. After it has fully settled, use as directed.
Tips on Colouring and Adding Flavours
Adding Food Colouring
Food colouring can easily be added to our Diabetic Cream Cheese Frosting recipe. Choose food colouring that is either powder or gel. Using liquid food colouring can make the frosting consistency runny and more difficult, especially if using a piping bag. To maintain the fluffiness, avoid liquid colouring.
I get the best results by using gel food colouring. The Wilton gel colours are very effective. Use a clean toothpick to add a small amount of colour to the icing. I like to add it to the cream cheese mixture before folding it in the whipped topping.
If you are unable to use the gel icing colours, opt for a concentrated liquid food colouring, that would only require a drop or two.
Adding Flavours
Some flavours are very compatible with our diabetic cream cheese frosting recipe. Omit the vanilla extract and replace it with peppermint extract, almond extract or even fruit flavours, such as raspberry and lemon.
Consider using powdered flavourings such as sugar-free jello mixes or sugar-free powdered water enhancers. Add a small amount at a time and taste as you go. This will also change the colour, so no additional colouring is needed.
When adding melted chocolate as a flavour, add it to the cream cheese before the whipped topping. After mixing add the whipped topping a small amount at a time until you have the right consistency. If using cocoa powder, you may need to add more whipped topping to get it to a spreadable consistency.
Adding spices – Some spices, such as cinnamon and pumpkin spice taste great added to the cream cheese frosting. Just remember that the spices will show up in the icing. Look for extracts, if the colour is important to you.
Always remember that adding anything other than what is listed in the recipe can alter the nutritional values listed.
We hope you enjoy the super easy Diabetic Cream Cheese Frosting recipe. Happy Baking!
