I have experimented with a couple of different ways to make this Sugar Free Candied bacon but I have found that using skewers gives the best results. The wooden skewers make it easy to turn the bacon over when brushing with more sauce.

Helpful Tips and FAQs

Serving Size

Typically one pound of bacon contains about 16 slices of bacon. The number of slices per pound depends on the bacon’s thickness. If using a thicker bacon cut, divide the pound by 8 to keep the nutritional information as accurate as possible.

Substitutions

Walden Farms Syrup

I prefer to use Walden Farms Syrup as it is a zero-calorie, zero-carb substitute for maple Syrup, but if you have another diabetic-friendly syrup you prefer, by all means, substitute it. Nutritional information may change as well as the flavour.

Swerve Brown Sugar Replacement

The Swerve sweetener used in this recipe contains sugar alcohols. If you have issues or concerns, substitute according to your dietary restrictions. In Canada Sugar Twin Brown is available. It is a perfect replacement and a sweetener I prefer, but it is not available in the US.

Bacon

If you prefer you can substitute the bacon for turkey bacon, vegan bacon or even ham strips. Feel free to make alterations that suit your needs.

Adding Spice and flavours

Add a little kick to this recipe by adding a pinch of chili powder, red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper.

Storing and Freezing

For the best taste and texture always serve the sugar free candied bacon fresh. Once frozen the bacon tends to lose its crispiness. If frozen, reheat in an air fryer or on a metal rack over a baking sheet in the oven.

  • On a parchment lined baking tray, lay the bacon out flat.
  • Brush one side of the bacon with the syrup mixture.
  • Wrap a slice of bacon around a wooden skewer. The brushed side of the bacon should be facing inward against the skewer.
  • Brush the outside of the bacon wrapped skewer with the syrup mixture.
  • Repeat with the remaining slices of bacon and lay them in the parchment lined baking tray about 1 inch apart.
  • Bake in oven for 15 – 20 minutes.
  • Remove the pan from the oven and brush both sides of each skewer with more sauce and then return the tray to the oven.
  • Turn the skewers and continue baking for another 20 minutes or until crispy.
  • Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.
  • **If the bacon is extra greasy, place each skewer over a cooling rack and allow the grease to drip off. (place tray under the rack)

Notes

  • Swerve contains Erythritol – 1 tbsp = 16 g
  • One serving is 1/8 of a pound of bacon or approx 2 regular slices.
