Pro Tips and FAQs

Can I use an alternate cereal in this recipe?

My goal with this Sugar Free Chocolate Crumb Crust recipe was to get as close to an Oreo Crumb Crust or Chocolate Wafer Crust recipe as possible. Replacing the cereal with a substitute will likely change the end result. You can substitute the Catalina Cereal crumbs with another cereal, remembering that the taste and nutritional value will be altered.

Can I use an alternative sweetener in this recipe?

I mention in many of the recipes that I always use Splenda or Splenda Stevia Blend, as they do not contain sugar alcohols. Sugar alcohols alter blood sugar levels in some people, making it less diabetic-friendly. As a precaution, I always use sweeteners that do not contain sugar alcohols. If this is not a concern for you, then by all means alter the sweetener to suit your preferences.

Do I need to bake this Sugar Free Chocolate Crumb Crust recipe?

The short answer is no! I like to bake the crust before using it as I prefer a crunchier crust. I find that when I do not bake it, I can become soggy. a baked crust is much easier to remove from the pan of your finished dessert, as it is more solid.

There are no risks in eating the crust unbaked, as all of the ingredients can be eaten as is.

For pudding-style pies, the unbaked crust will absorb some of the moisture and be more difficult to remove from your pan.

What is the texture of this crust when finished?

The finished baked Sugar Free Chocolate Crumb Crust is like a crunchy cookie. It is very similar to an Oreo crumb crust. It is not gritty like almond flour or almond meal. It has a strong chocolate flavour without bitterness.

Can I freeze this crust?

This crust, when baked, can easily be frozen. Freeze in an airtight container for up to 2 months. To defrost, place at room temperature until thawed. If you find there is any moisture in the crust after thawing, heat an oven to 325F (160C). Turn the oven off and then place the crust into the oven while the oven is cooling down. the heat in the oven should remove any of the remaining moisture from the crust.
